Anatomy of a creative: what makes an ad stop the scroll

A person scrolling a feed gives an ad about one second before moving on. Let's break down the parts of a creative that wins that second.

The four parts of every creative

"Stop overpaying…" Learn more 1 · Hookthe first second 2 · Visualclear without sound 3 · Promisewhat the person gets 4 · CTAwhat to do next
One ad in the feed and its four parts. If any of them is weak, there's no click.
  1. Hook — the first line or frame. Its job is to stop the thumb: an unexpected question, a familiar situation, a number.
  2. Visual — what's clear without sound or text. Most people watch feeds muted, so the meaning has to read visually.
  3. Promise — what problem the product solves. Specific and honest: no "magic" effects or guarantees that platforms ban.
  4. Call to action — one clear action: "learn more", "order now". Several calls to action in one creative compete with each other.

Pre-launch checklist

  • The hook is clear in one second — test by showing the creative to someone for one second.
  • The meaning reads without sound.
  • The promise matches what the person will see on the landing page.
  • No banned claims: medical effects, guaranteed results, "before/after" in restricted verticals.
  • The format fits the placement: 9:16 for Stories and Reels, 4:5 for the feed.

Why creatives burn out

The same audience sees a creative again and again and stops reacting. CTR slowly drops and the click price rises. That's normal: a creative is a consumable. So you always need 2–3 fresh variants in rotation, not one "perfect" ad.

Don't change everything at once — change one part: a new hook on the same visual often brings CTR back faster than a brand-new creative.
